Recommendations On How To Get the Best Golden Color From Old Teak Wood

Scoring a top-notch piece of teak furniture from an estate sale or thrift store can make the mellowest of individuals gleeful. Teak is very valued due to its longevity, strength and endurability and can be quite costly if quality pieces are bought new. If you are fortunate enough to find a second hand piece for a great deal or if undefined fortunate enough to have somebody give you a piece of teak furniture, undefined to need to spend the time to refinish it to bring it back to its natural glory.

There are a few options dependent on your classy preferences. Teak that has been revived and oiled and finished has a rich honey golden-brown tone undefined gorgeous. Nonetheless some people do prefer a country, weathered appearance. In both cases, you are going to want to provide some care to it so that your furniture will last you a long time.

If the piece of outdoor teak furniture that you have bought is a silvery-gray colour, it might be from being very old, the prior owner preferred a weathered appearance, or it was left uncared for in the outside elements.

To Bring Back That Golden Glow

Your primary step will be determined by the wear and tear of the wood and any prior finishes. If the furniture has spent a long time outside without any care, you may have to begin by cleaning the wood with a green 3M Scotch Brite pad, undefined use metal scrubbers.

You can use special teak cleaners or you can just mix ammonia OR bleach (do not mix the two together, it’s damaging) with a mild detergent and water. You will need to wash totally and then permit furniture to dry for a few days in the sun before sanding.

Sanding should either be done by hand with a block sander or with an electric finishing sander. Always sand in the same direction of the grain; if you go against the grain, it is going to be clear in the finalized profuct. You will want to start with a 180-grain sandpaper and finish with a 220 fine grain sandpaper.

Finish the sanding with tack material, taking care to get rid of any dust or waste from the surface.

The final finishing touch will be the sealer. You undefined scrimp on this finishing product. You should get specific teak wood sealers. Or you could ruin your furniture. Completely coat the furniture with the sealer and rub into the grain with a rag, let it thoroughly dry, then put on a second coat.

That is it! If you like to keep that golden colour, undefined to copy the washing and sealing once a year. You undefined have to re-sand it again unless there are specific spots that became stained by wine or coffee.

On the yearly cleaning and sealing, you must only really have to re-seal the parts that are exposed to the sun.

Teak wooden furniture is very beautiful and enduring for generations. Taking great care of your teak will make sure that it gets to your grandchildren and great-grandchildren to enjoy.

Teak Wood Isn’t Just for Furniture Nowadays

It is no secret that teak wood is the prime choice for outdoor furniture or indoor furniture when the main goal is beautiful furniture which will endure for dozens of years or perhaps generations. Teak is ideal for patio and garden furniture, dining room tables, kitchen workspaces and drawers and poolside furniture.

The reason that teak is so superb for outside and damp areas is actually because the wood is a really dense, heavy wood undefined a natural high oil content. Correctly cared for, outdoor teak wood furniture will last a whole life or more.
With this under consideration, teak would also be a superb choice for decking and outside structures. The teak will last much longer than standard pine lumber-built decks, which have a tendency to warp and splinter swiftly. Teak would offer a gorgeous background for all of the special teak furniture pieces that you have invested in over time.
Bear in mind some of the most well-liked reasons that teak wood is extremely desirable:
  • Mould resistant
  • Proof against water
  • Insect resistant
  • Weather resistant
  • Extremely strong and durable
  • Resistant to warping and cracking
These are all excellent reasons to choose teak as your selection of wood for outdoor structures like decks, terraces, pergolas, trellis’s, arbors, gazebos, gardening benches, flower bed borders, and so much more.
Because structures like decking and gazebos are difficult to wash down and oil on a consistent basis, you might need to consider having it professionally stained and sealed. This will help keep the golden honey brown colour for a really long time.
Before making a last choice on lumber, add up the cost of the teak, then add up the price of pine or the other selection of lumber you were thinking about. Once you tot up the other wood, times it by the quantity of times it would need to be replaced in 100 years, because that is about the least time period your teak structure will last if it is properly cared for.
Because it might be the most expensive at first, teak wood decking and out of doors spaces will provide you a life of beauty and worth for your house and garden.

More about Teak Wood

Teak is a tropical hardwood birch tree, also known as Tectona, which is grown on plantations in various areas of South East Asia including Indonesia, India, Myanmar, Phillippines and Malaysia. Teak trees reach a height of up to 150 ft and often can live up to 100 years if unharvested. Tree harvesting and conservation is strictly controlled by the government in these countries to ensure an adequate supply of high grade teak for furniture and other products. The best quality teak wood comes from trees at least 40 years old that have been drained of water for a period of 1 to 2 years. There are many processes involved in the harvesting of teak which must be performed under exacting conditions in order to produce high-quality teak wood for use in furniture. These are performed under the careful cooperation of tree plantations and the governments of teak producing countries. New, genetically improved teak woods and improved harvesting technologies are beginning to allow for faster processing of teak woods. What makes teak so special? It has many qualities that make it a superior wood for furniture. It is highly resistant to all kinds of weather. It contains naturally antibacterial qualities which make it highly resistant to decay and insects. Its fibers are elastic for woodworking ease, yet it holds it’s form for many years, making it ideal for things like boat decks and furniture. Teak’s heartwood contains a special oil which repels water and keeps it gleaming like new year after year. It maintains its strength and will not become brittle, even when left outside in the elements for years. Another characteristic of teak is its easy maintenance. In fact, depending on your preference, no special care is needed at all. After about 3 months of exposure, teak will begin to develop a “weathered” appearance that will continue for another 6 to 9 months. This gray patina appearance is a highly distinctive feature of teak wood that allows it to easily blend into any outdoor environment. If you prefer to keep your teak furniture its original golden brown, then simply apply a light coat of teak oil 3 times a year, or seal with a high-quality teak sealer once a year. If your teak furniture is kept indoors out of the sunlight from windows, you may notice it gradually turn slightly more brown within the first year. You may wonder if outdoor teak furniture is really a good investment. The answer is a resounding “yes!!” Despite careful conservation techniques and new technologies that may allow for faster harvesting of trees, demand for teak products continues to grow as people around the world discover its beauty and versatility. Prices will continue to rise as supply is unable to keep up with this increasing demand. All of our teak products utilize grade A, kiln dried teak, the finest in the world. What does this mean? Grade A means that there are no knots, cracks, imperfections or color variations in the wood. Kiln dried, means that the wood has been thoroughly dried for maximum strength and sturdiness. Rest assured, our teak furniture will continue to be a good investment as each year passes.
